WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., May 5 -- Rock sensation the Goo Goo Dolls will headline an
unprecedented 18-hour marathon of unique programming on a special SIRIUS
Satellite Radio BMW channel. Preceding the Goo Goo Dolls live performance, to be
broadcast from Los Angeles, the 18-hour marathon will showcase dozens of the
best driving songs of all time and a series of "travelogues," vignettes from the
road gathered during a historic grassroots 44-day cross country tour dubbed "3
Across America." The broadcast celebrates the May 6th US on-sale date of BMW's
New 3 Series.
The partnership between BMW and SIRIUS marks the first time an automaker has
used satellite radio to launch a new vehicle.
The Goo Goo Dolls will perform live from the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los
Angeles, with the concert broadcast in real time on "BMW Channel" 126 from 10:30
PM to 11:30 PM (ET). The concert will also air on The Pulse // Channel 9, pop
music from the 90's and today.
"The 3 Series is all about high energy excitement and fast-paced fun," remarked
Wayne Schulte, Media Communications Manager, BMW of North America. "That's also
a great way to describe the music of the Goo Goo Dolls, known to millions for
their hits like 'Iris,' 'Name' and 'Slide' among others. We couldn't think of a
better way to celebrate the end of our cross-country tour then to have a
world-class rock band kick off the US sales debut of a world- class automobile
with an exclusive concert event that brings it all together."
BMW and SIRIUS say the 18-hour broadcast will be part cultural diary, and part
entertainment, with the Goo Goo Dolls simulcast as its centerpiece.
The broadcast begins at 6:00 AM (ET) on May 6th as anchors Sal D'Aleo and Elise
Brown kick off BMW Radio on SIRIUS with an energetic four hours sharing a love
of driving, cars, and music. Knowing what it's like to roll down the windows and
turn up the radio, Sal and Elise also double as tour guides on a city-by-city
travelogue of BMW's "3 Across America," mixing music with stories from each city
and interviews with attendees.
Anchoring the second set will be Jon Thomas and Greg Schweizer showcasing their
own style and energy, as they creatively match upbeat driving songs to the
regions they discuss. For instance, when the spotlight is on Detroit, songs by
Detroit artists like the Spencer Davis Group or Mitch Ryder will inevitably be
played.
Jon and Greg will be followed by Mitch Todd, both a passionate car enthusiast
and radio announcer, playing the best driving songs of all time and-in his own
words-celebrating the spirit of the road and the songs we love to drive to.
From 6:30 to 10:30 PM (ET), Ken Silverstein -- who drove across country with the
3 Across America tour -- will recall the most notable highlights of the 44-day
road trip. Expect him to reveal his funniest stories from the road, the most
interesting person he met and the city with the most surprises. Supplementing
these insights, the DJs will continue to play great driving music. Of special
note, joining Ken in the later hours will be Mark Goodman, the Original MTV VJ,
as the broadcast continues live from the Petersen Automotive Museum.
The 18-hour marathon will culminate at 10:30 PM (ET) when Mark Goodman
introduces the Goo Goo Dolls, live in concert and exclusively broadcast on
SIRIUS.
The Goo Goo Dolls, who released a special live CD/DVD package titled Live in
Buffalo; July 4, 2004 last November, are currently in the studio working on
their eighth studio album to be released on Warner Bros. Records later this
year.
By partnering with SIRIUS, BMW is tapping into a market of like-minded consumers
that value new technology and novel communication techniques. SIRIUS currently
has over 1.24 million subscribers.
